About a decade ago I took on the challenge of reading Desiring God by John Piper. I was sometimes overwhelmed by the wordiness and massive descriptions, but I found myself intrigued by what he was saying. The lavish love of God he talked about wasn't something I saw every day in the people in my church and I wanted to understand it. I would dare say it is almost discouraged in our religious circles. It seems to be the desire of God for us to desire Him in a lavish and passionate way. He wants us to enjoy Him. This study goes about showing us how to do that. It took me a while to get through these, but it was well worth it. While reading the book was helpful and truly stimulated  my thinking about my relationship with God, I really found the dvds helpful in unpacking it all. Several years ago, I had the opportunity to attend a training for The Truth Project. It is an engaging classroom style dvd curriculum on the Bible produced by Focus on the Family. This is another course along those same lines. It would be an excellent place to start for new or uneducated believers and unbelievers alike. The films are top notch and you find yourself wrapped up in the adventure of trying to find out if we can trust the Bible for accuracy. I highly recommend it. Hermie and Friends: A Bug Collection is a set of three dvds that teach kids wonderful moral lessons. Included is Milo the Mantis Who Wouldn't Pray, Buzbee and the Grumblebees, and Hailey and Bailey's Big Fight. Lessons are taught regarding prayer, complaining, and arguing. We were all abuzz here when we received this dvd set. Hermie is one of our favorite cartoons to watch in our family. The animation is great and the characters are truly engaging. You can't help but love them all. Each dvd gave us an opportunity for great discussion. There were also plenty of times when the dialogue spoke to me as an adult. Milo reminded us to pray even when we don't see immediate results. Buzzbee showed us how to be respectful and obey. Hailey and Bailee showed us how to keep our focus on things that are important. They were all great. We highly recommend them for your dvd library. Laomai, my four year old, can retell all of the lessons from each dvd to me with ease after one viewin...

Have you seen this movie? I think I was the last to watch it. I wasn't sure that I could handle the intensity of it while pregnant, but I bit the bullet and watched. I can now agree with Donald Miller in the fact that this raised the bar for Christian movies. As we think our world and society is bad, we are confronted with the idea of how much worse it could be if the word of God were removed from us entirely.  The reality of it all is that we may look very much like these people, if the false image of our society was removed from us. We treat people like they treated each other in this movie. We simply have nicer cars and wave from our minivans as though we had a heart. We call hate grace and mock God. To us, we look pretty amazing. I mean, we aren't out right killing anyone.  Then we see two pictures. We see Eli who went on mission for God even though he was not perfected.
