Marriage & Substitutionary Atonement

Our goal in covenant marriage is to lay down our life so that our spouse can become more like Christ. Give them the grace to mature. Keep your eyes on the cross. I recently read this passage in a book entitled  Well-Driven Nails by Byron Yawn: The Problem with Christian Marriage Seminars It is assumed by most evangelicals that doctrine plays little if any role in life's more important issues. Take marriage, for example. Our most popular books on the subject would indicate the need is practical and not theological. But is not biblical marriage dependent on the central doctrine of our faith, the atonement (Ephesians 5:22-33)? Paul's discussion of marriage was merely an opportunity to emphasize the power of the cross in one important area of life. He was not using the death of Christ as an analogy of marriage. We've got it backwards, He was using marriage as an analogy of the cross. Marriage is⎯at it's core⎯a living analogy of Christ's death. The po...

Denbigh Dotes on Diamondbacks

I have been longing for years to be a guest blogger on my wife’s website…….and the day is finally here!  Usually, whenever I am pondering something highly controversial, I pester my wife to let me write about it.  She wisely refuses.  Since Friday is her “food blog” day, there’s little chance of me ruffling any feathers.  (Unless, of course, you are a vegetarian.) For our 8 th  anniversary a few weeks ago, we happened to be in Waco, TX, home to numerous fine eating establishments.  Most importantly, however, Waco is home to Nonni (Stephanie’s mom).  We provided her with 2 beautiful grandchildren, she provided us with a much desired evening out. Having been on the road for the better part of 3 months and dining mostly on camp food, we were both desperately craving a sumptuous steak.  There are a few choices in that department in Waco, but we already had a place picked out:  Diamondbacks.  Doesn’t that just  soun...

The Love Dare

I have had this book sitting on the shelf in my studio for years. It was given to me as a gift. I honestly thought it would be full of cheesy anectdotal stories and so I never picked it up. I was prompted by the Holy Spirit this summer to work my way through the book for the forty days leading up to our wedding anniversary. My mind has been changed about it. I did the math and I realized that between my husband and my four parents there have been 17 marriages. I really had an awakening as to the miracle that we have been married for the amount of time we have. In our society, marriages fall apart every day. This has led me to truly celebrate the marriages around me. God has been good to us. May we celebrate Him in our covenants with one another. I used the journaling space for each day to pray for my husband, our marriage, and myself and I chose to give it to him instead of a card for our anniversary. The book led you through all the attributes of love and I was genuinely and life-cha...
