Just a Little Hole Diggin'

Image
Hey y'all, it's been full of life around here and I haven't had a chance to write. Let me catch you all up to speed. Over the past weekend, we had our Spring Work Day. About thirty-five people showed up to work. Tons of work was being done. They cleared about half of the brush and trees (some 45-50 foot tall) along our back fence line. They even cut a few things up for our neighbor. That may have made me get a little watery eyed. They completed the sheet rock in the guest room and most of the second floor dining room. My friend Amy provided all the lunch. It was fantastic. It made me cry as well. So, there you have it. Lots of people giving and serving as I weep. On Sunday, some of our favorite people were baptized and there was an after party. Who doesn't love a Holy Spirit after party. Then we went back to church to have a night of worship. It was wonderful and you could just sense the presence of Jesus in His beauty all around. Sunday night, our dear fr...

Sanding an Old Mansion

Image
You know, we bought this old mansion to use as a no cost retreat center for pastors and missionaries.  Denbigh is often too busy to work on it. He is always doing work for church or traveling around playing his guitar for Jesus. That leaves me to rehab the house. You can easily come to understand why I am deeply grateful for volunteers. There are so many things that I just cannot do. I am excited for the volunteers coming this Saturday. I cordially invite you to come join us from 8 to 4 this Saturday. There is something for every skill level. If you can keep my kids from running in the street, you can volunteer. I have been filling in the cracks on the floor in our guest room with twine and putty (a trick I learned from This Old House) for months. I did it in my spare time. That's about 7 minutes a day. I could never seem to get it done because there are always people in there. I did it, people. Praise the Lord. It seems like a minor thing, but I bet I have a good cry over...

Sam Houston BSM at Gomer

Image
This past weekend was perfectly delightful. Five guys from the Sam Houston State University BSM stayed with us and volunteered. Friday night they showed up around six in the evening and put together our new trampoline. My girls were in bed when they finished putting it together, so I tested it out for them. Of course, they all were on there over the next day. They did this for the children, I'm sure.  They did a ton of work around the property by cleaning up brush, putting up more fence, trimming our giant trees, and putting foam on the ceiling in the living room. They are all around nice guys that bless us. We are so grateful for their coming. Thank you, gentleman, for your hard work and gracious hearts. Come again anytime. What I made for supper: Chicken breast topped with cream cheese, jalapeño, bacon, and a slice of aged swiss.  In other news, our beloved bassist and drummer are going on tour with the O Hellos and opening for Need To Breathe. We have been i...

It's Practically Southern Living.

Y'all, follow me on the Instagram. I'm SCherry77. Perhaps you tuned in yesterday when I waxed poetic about the irises in my Southern garden. It's practically Southern Living over here, lovelies. I talked about my day of bringing things down from the third floor and the fact that I clocked eight miles on my fitbit in the house that day. It was crazy. We have so much stuff. We have stuff in boxes and against all of our walls in this enormous house. We did have a cute normal-sized house before we moved here. When we get out the things we had in our house before, they look like miniature versions of how they perfectly fit our other home. That means we had to let go. Then people give us stuff left and right. Some of it is nice and some isn't. The trouble is that we have so much stuff that we can't get to the walls to finish the work. I had a bone-deep need to purge so we can finish working around here.  I cleaned out about half of the third floor and sold o...

Gomer, I Carried a Watermelon.

Image
Hello, y'all.  Part of the week, Denbigh and I were out of town. In case you missed it, here is my post on Hope Spoken . Sunday we went to church with my momma and saw some lovely faces of old friends. She attends the church Denbigh and I were married in almost eleven years ago. Monday was a day of laundry.  I thought I would share a pic of the tape falling off the wall because I think it is funny. I looks like someone toilet-papered (is that hyphenated?) the inside of my house. If you get a hankering to slap up some dry wall mud, come on over.  Tuesday came and our friend Dave came to volunteer for the day. The toilet in our second floor bath needed the floor under it redone and some leaks to be fixed. They thought this would be a simple job that would require a few hours of work. As you can guess with rehabbing a 100 year old house, there was more to it. When they pulled the floor up, they realized that there was no support under it and that some pipes were l...

Come Sit a Spell, Gomer.

Image
Hello dear friends of Gomer, The last week I have been cleaning house. I mopped eight times and it still isn't clean. Let's just be clear, drywall dust is a real bear. It keeps getting tracked all over my finished floors. It makes a girl want to lay out on the floor and go Mr. Miagi on them. Wax on. Wax off. Alas, I will just keep mopping and I'll persevere. There is also tape falling off the wall still because I just couldn't get to it. I'm sure it will all work out. I think I can reuse it even if it's been on the ground. I realized that 7 out of 10 rooms are completely drywalled downstairs so my drywall dust dilemma will soon come to an end. The only rooms left are the living room, part of the parlor, and the small butler pantry. No more dark and dreary, y'all. We did get to purchase Gomer some spring plants and started doing yard work. Denbigh rented a self-propelled lawn aerator. He fed and reseeded the St. Augustine. Then on the most glor...

Glory be. It's a Room, Gomer.

Well, y'all, we did it. We hosted a great group of folks here on a mission trip last week. It gets pretty challenging while managing three small children. The clean up can be really tricky. There are screws and dust and drywall all over the place. That has to all be cleaned up before my girls can go downstairs. As of this writing, I have one room to go. Hopefully, I can get that done tonight.  You know, I asked Jesus to multiply their work and I believe He answered me. There was so much done. We haven't had light or electrical on the third floor and now we do. It's pretty amazing to be able to see up there. The drywall up there was old and sketchy. Some of it would crumble to pieces if you looked at it the wrong way. They tore all of that down. Did you know that they used to use the third floor as a ballroom? Perhaps that should be the name of the guest suite. The Ballroom. On the first floor, they house wrapped, insulated with foam and drywalled the room where o...
